In 2024, major airlines such as Delta, United, Wizz Air, IndiGo, Spirit, ITA Airways, JetBlue, Frontier, easyJet, and Turkish Airlines dominated the skies with significant Airbus arrivals, marking a year of remarkable growth and expansion. These carriers not only saw impressive increases in the number of aircraft delivered but also achieved outstanding passenger traffic milestones, reflecting their growing influence in the global aviation industry. As they continue to expand their fleets and improve service offerings, these airlines have solidified their positions as leaders in the aviation sector, with Airbus deliveries playing a key role in their success.
In 2024, Airbus delivered 766 aircraft, almost meeting its mid-year target of 770. This marked its most successful year since the pandemic, showcasing a solid recovery for the European aircraft manufacturer. However, despite this achievement, Airbus still faces supply chain challenges and hasn’t yet returned to pre-pandemic production levels, where it delivered 863 aircraft in 2019.
Meanwhile, its biggest rival, Boeing, encountered difficulties that impacted its production. The company had to contend with the aftermath of the Alaska B737 MAX incident and a lengthy machinists’ strike. Boeing ended 2024 with only 333 deliveries, representing a significant drop of a third from 2023’s numbers.
Airbus saw impressive results across many of its aircraft models in 2024:
In 2024, Airbus delivered nearly 40% of its total aircraft to the top 10 airlines. This highlights the company’s strong relationships with its customers and the demand for specific models, particularly the A321, which has helped Airbus stay ahead of Boeing in recent years.
In 2024, major airlines set remarkable records in passenger transport, continuing their growth and expanding their global reach.
Delta achieved an impressive milestone, serving over 200 million customers in 2024. The airline’s success was underscored by a robust December, where it flew 16 million customers, contributing to a 1.9% year-on-year increase in passenger numbers.
United also had a record-breaking year, carrying 180 million passengers—its highest-ever total. December alone saw 16 million passengers flying with the airline, reflecting its strong growth and solid performance across the year. United’s passenger count rose by 1.9% from the previous year, reaching 5.06 million in December.
IndiGo reached a historic achievement by becoming the first Indian airline to fly over 10 million passengers in a single month. Among the 10 million, 9.07 million were domestic passengers, breaking previous records and establishing new highs for the airline. December 2024 is expected to break further records for the carrier.
ITA Airways saw substantial growth in passenger revenue, reaching 2.7 billion euros in 2024—an increase of 26% compared to the previous year. The airline transported 18 million passengers, marking a 20% rise in traffic and showcasing its strong market performance.
Frontier Airlines continued its growth with more than 30 million passengers in 2023, marking a 19% increase over the previous year. The airline remains a key player in the US low-cost carrier sector.
easyJet also experienced significant growth, transporting 89.7 million passengers in 2024, an 8% increase from the 82.8 million passengers it carried in 2023. The airline’s rise reflects its steady expansion and increasing customer demand across its network.
Turkish Airlines continued its expansion in 2024, carrying 83.4 million passengers—a 2.1% increase over the previous year. This steady growth further reinforces Turkish Airlines’ position as a global leader in international air travel.
These airlines not only set new records but also demonstrated their resilience and ability to adapt to the changing dynamics of global air travel in 2024.
While Airbus faced some hurdles in 2024, it had an incredibly strong year in terms of deliveries, particularly with the A321 family. IndiGo and Delta were the largest recipients, followed by Wizz Air and Spirit Airlines. Despite ongoing challenges in its supply chain, Airbus remains on track to solidify its position as the world’s leading aircraft manufacturer, outpacing Boeing and meeting the demands of airlines around the globe.
